Ole Olsen The Wild Hunt of Thor
Sibelius Violin Concerto in D Minor, op.47
Tchaikovsky Symphony No.4

Our opening concert has a distinct Scandinavian-Russian flavour, with one of Russia's most prestigious and versatile orchestras, the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio being directed by Norwegian conductor Terje Mikkelsen, currently their Principal Guest Conductor.

As a graduate of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, it is fitting that Mikkelsen will be conducting the Finnish composer's Violin Concerto, with its impression of vast distances and melancholic serenity that are so evocative of the Nordic countryside.

The concerto is played by young Russian violinist Alena Baeva, one of the most powerful talents of her generation. She started her international career some 15 years ago – at the tender age of 10!

Few listeners will know the works of 19th-century Norwegian composer, Ole Olsen, but everyone will be beguiled by The Wild Hunt of Thor, a striking tone-poem depicting a kind of Ride of the Valkyries and displaying the twin influences of Norse mythology and Wagner.

The irresistible forces of fate pervade Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony, above all in the resounding brass fanfares that herald the opening and reappear in the final movement.

With its song-like 'canzone' second movement and pizzicato ostinato third movement,
the extraordinary contrasts and shifts of mood of this symphony help give it its immense power.
