Led by Dr Sam Newton, this course is an attempt to recontruct something of the lost chapters of the history of Cambridge from the fifth to the eleventh centuries. We shall explore what we can of the post-Roman story of Cambridge from the references to Grantacester, as it was known then, in early mediaevel sources. These will be considered within its archaeological and broader landscape contexts, with special attention to the Anglo-Saxon and Danish kingdom of East Anglia.
