[The Film Festival]
The Cambridge University Southeast Asian Forum (CUSEAF) is proud to present the university's inaugural Southeast Asian Film Festival dedicated towards highlighting the amazing work of Southeast Asian storytellers and the rich history behind one of the world's most ethnically diverse regions.

We will be screening "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" and "The Staging Post". Both are documentaries that tell the stories of refugees in Southeast Asia. They will be followed by a Live Skype interview with Khadim, Khalil and Muzafar about their first-hand experiences as refugees, activists and community leaders in Indonesia.

To start off this week-long film festival, we will be hosting a dual screening of "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea", a film by Jessie Taylor and Ali Reza Sadiqi, and the first episode of feature documentary, "The Staging Post", by Jolyon Hoff, before rounding off the event with a Live Skype conference with Khadim Dai, Muzafar Ali and Abdul Khalil about their first-hand experiences as refugees, activists and community leaders in Indonesia.

This week's screening will be held at the Lloyd Room, Christ's College.

We look forward to meeting you there!

[About the Films]
Title: Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
Directed by: Jessie Taylor & Ali Reza Sadiqi
Running Time: 11 minutes (short version)
Synopsis:

"When she was 9, Zainab’s parents made the heartbreaking decision to leave their home in northern Afghanistan. They set out on a journey across the globe, putting the fate of their family in the hands of strangers.

Across borders, behind bars and onto a smuggler’s boat – the family chased freedom.

‘Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea’ tells Zainab’s story, and the story of many others who have trodden the same path.

Jessie Taylor and Ali Reza Sadiqi travelled across Indonesia and met with 250 asylum seekers in jails, detention centres and hostels. Through candid interviews, hidden camera footage and in the words of asylum seekers themselves, the story of the ‘refugee’ is told. What pushes people to leave home? What do they leave behind? What do they fear? Why did they choose this path? And what does it take to turn someone into a ‘boat person’?

Meet the human faces behind the most controversial issue of our time."

Title: The Staging Post
Directed by: Jolyon Hoff
Running Time: 15 minutes
Synopsis:

"Three years ago the Australian Government ‘stopped the boats’. At the time Jolyon Hoff was living in Jakarta and wanted to know more. Who were these refugees anyway? Where did they came from, and what were they going to do now ?

Follow the journey of two Afghan Hazara refugees, Muzafar Ali and Khadim Dai as they attempt to start their lives anew in Cisarua, Indonesia".
