Join us for this free, lively and thought-provoking discussion on public patient involvement in medical research. Led by some of the leading experts in their field the panel discussion will feature Dr Kath Maguire, Dr Fiona Walter and Jackie Ashley.

Dr Maguire (Social and Political Sciences, 1998) is an research fellow in public involvement with the National Institute for Health Research Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care for the South West Peninsula (PenCLAHRC). As a former carer and experienced lay reviewer she became one of the founder members of their public and patient involvement group (PenPIG). Since then she has completed a PhD study of public and patient involvement in health research and joined the patient and public involvement team as a member of staff.

Dr Fiona Walter is Principal Researcher in Primary Care Cancer Research at The Primary Care Unit Department of Public Health and Primary Care University of Cambridge, Fellow of Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor, University of Melbourne. Her research, focusing on improving cancer diagnosis, has greatly benefited from input from patient and public representatives.

President Elect of Lucy Cavendish College, Jackie Ashley has stalked the corridors of power in Westminster for over 30 years, working as a prominent political journalist and broadcaster, sitting on influential commissions and chairing conferences.

Her career started in 1979, as a BBC trainee. A rich and varied working life has followed, including roles such as Producer and Newsreader on Newsnight, Political Correspondent with ITN, Channel 4 politics producer, Presenter of several political programmes on BBC2 and ITV and Political Editor at the New Statesman.

In her most recent role – as a Columnist and Political Interviewer at The Guardian – Jackie has covered Labour, Conservative and Coalition politics, women’s rights, the media and public services, with a particular focus on health. She has also closely followed the weekly political argument as the presenter of BBC Radio 4’s The Week in Westminster.

Growing up in a home centered around politics made a lasting impression on Jackie. As well as forging a career in the field, she too has been a passionate campaigner on issues such as equal pay, support for carers, the elderly and the NHS.
