Who is not familiar with Beethoven’s great Eroica symphony, in many ways the epitome of “classical" music, yet with a fire and passion that was to usher in the "romantic" era?
This is the centrepiece of a concert of music from composers of this most evocative of periods, taking place in Ely Cathedral at 7.30pm on Saturday 9th May.
The concert, presented by Ely Sinfonia with conductor Steve Bingham, also features Max Bruch's Violin Concerto no 1, played by the astounding young violinist Edward Tomanek, who passed his grade 8 when still only six years old and now, at 13, is still at junior school: he holds scholarship at Kings College School, Cambridge.
But we begin right at the end of the era, with Johann Strauss’s overture to Die Fledermaus, with its images of Viennese ballrooms and New Year. A concert of delightful romanticism!
