ISLAND and HEREWARD

Jeremy Harmer, narrator
Conducted by Steve Bingham

100 years ago, World War I was raging across Europe. As a tribute to those who gave their lives, Ely Sinfonia presents a concert that takes in the whole community to play and sing the world premières of two major new musical works exploring the themes of war, resistance, conflict and resolution.

Taking part in Island and Hereward will be choristers and soloists from Ely Cathedral, children from the Ely Imps choir, massed children’s voices from local primary schools, and adult singers from In Voco Parentis, the parents’ choir from King’s College School, Cambridge, and the Colchester Institute Cantores Chamber Choir.

Island is an oratorio for children and adult singers and orchestra, composed by Jeremy Harmer ad Phil Toms and commissioned by Ely Sinfonia. It tells a story of conflict that is resolved, in the end, through music – because “Once people have made music together, once people have sung the same songs together in beautiful harmony, then maybe they will never be enemies again.”

Hereward is a new piece of community music for Cambridgeshire scored for orchestra, choir and percussion, inspired by the Fenland hero who resisted the Normans. Composed by Richard Brown and commissioned by Linda Fairbrother, High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire. it tells of defeat and reconciliation between enemies. With words from Charles Kingsley’s poems about Hereward and original Anglo Saxon battle cries to add drama to the story of the battles in the fens around Ely, it culminates in a charming medieval style song and a gentle Latin Dona Nobis Pacem to signify the final peace settlement.
