As we commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of World War I, join Ely Consort in the beautiful surroundings of Ely Cathedral on 8 November at 8pm for a special concert of remembrance. It will feature two very contrasting pieces, both incredibly moving in different ways.

The concert will begin with Christmas Truce, a new oratorio by the composer Jonathan Rathbone and the local writer Graeme Curry, for choir, baritone soloist and instrumental ensemble. It explores one of the most remarkable and poignant stories of the war – the spontaneous ceasefire at the front line in France on Christmas Eve 1914. Christmas Truce draws on the writing of the soldiers who were there – from details of the gifts they exchanged to accounts of joint burial services in no man's land. It includes settings of poems by Edward Thomas, who was killed in action at Arras in 1917, arrangements of the carols sung by the German and allied soldiers to each other from their trenches, and a new version of the 23rd Psalm, sung in both English and German.

In the second half of the concert Ely Consort will sing Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, one of the most sublime settings of the requiem mass. The famous Pie Jesu will be sung by a member of Ely Cathedral Girls’ Choir, and the baritone soloist will be Dominic Sedgwick, who makes a welcome return to perform with Ely Consort. The concert will be conducted by Ely Consort's Musical Director, Matthew Rudd, and former Cathedral assistant organist Jonathan Lilley will be the accompanist in the Requiem.
